Can You Make a Cake Without Eggs?

If you have any experience with baking then you know exactly how important eggs are. However, it isn’t blasphemous to not use eggs when making a cake. Now eggs to make baking a cake easier, but they can be replaced with other food items that will pretty much get you similar result. So whether you are allergic to eggs or just don’t have any in your fridge, you can use the following ingredients as substitutes for the egg when making a cake.

Bananas

Bananas are one of the most popular fruits around the world and easily available. Who knew they would make a great substitute for eggs in cakes. Full of protein and fiber, you need to make sure you use the right amount of banana. You need to mash the banana’s up and around 1/4 of a cup of mashed banana amounts to 1 egg. So mash up as much banana as the recipe calls for and add it. You should note that adding banana will leave the cake with a banana flavor, but of course, you already knew that.

Applesauce

Applesauce has been known as a wonderful substitute for oil when it comes to baked goods but you can also use it to replace eggs. Similar to mashed bananas, 1/4 cup of applesauce amounts to 1 egg. Now, we recommend using unsweetened applesauce but if you only have sweetened applesauce then you can reduce the amount of sugar you add to the cake mixture to counter the sweetness.

Flaxseeds

If you are looking for a really heart-healthy substitute for eggs then look no further than flax seeds. Flax seeds are known to be wonderful for the heart and they are also fairly easy to substitute to use. All you have to do is mix one tablespoon of flaxseed with 2-3 tablespoons of water. Let it sit for a while until the water is absorbed and viscous. The mixture should be enough to replace 1 egg in the recipe so make as much as you need.

Baking powder, water, and oil

Not the most healthy substitute but if you don’t have access to the other three options then you can go with this combination. You want to add two teaspoons of baking powder, one teaspoon of vegetable or corn oil, and two tablespoons of water. Whisk them together until they are mixed well together and use it as a substitute for 1 egg.

Starting off as a baker, you were probably told of how important an egg would be in your recipe for a cake. However, the above substitute works just as well and may even provide a healthy alternative to using egg. Eggs are healthy and nutritious but sometimes you just cannot use them.
